I watched last night’s “Nightline” segment on Craigslist, the wildly successful global billboard for people around the world seeking everything from speech classes to sperm donors.
Just hours before, I hosted a teleseminar with Nancy Mills of The Spirited Woman website, who has been using Craigslist as a valuable publicity tool to promote her in-person events and teleseminars with famous woman authors, actresses and editors. Nancy says that when she has posted events to Craigslist, she has been able to track 90 percent of her business as having come from the list.
I didn’t realize it during the teleseminar, but here’s one more huge reason to use Craigslist in your PR campaign. Google gives Craigslist a page ranking of 8 out of a possible 10. Few websites have that high a ranking.
What does that mean to you? Google gives more weight to your website if other sites with a high page ranking link to you.
Yesterday’s teleseminar is available as a CD or electronic transcript here.
If you’re using Craigslist as a publicity tool, tell us what you’re doing, and the results.
Your class on Craig’s List was great.
Quick question – why would Craig’s List improve my page ranking? My listing would only stay up for a week and then it is taken down, right? Or, is part of the strategy to create a listing that is renewed everyweek?
My results so far are ignoble! One post went under “Free” as in visit my site and tune into Free Relationship Advice – Interviews with top contemporaries – exclusively available through moi.
This was deleted as “spam.”
The second post was placed under Community “groups” – has not been deleted! and has brought in about 12 visits.
Is there a “best day” of the week to post? Should I post on weekends or week days? Any input.
Thanks again – I’ll let you know what happens with the next and larger batch of postings.

Viveca:
A post on Craigslist would improve your page ranking for only as long as your post is on the list. So revisit the site every 30 days or so and repost. Yes, that’s spart of the strategy.
As for the announcement that was kicked off as spam, you have to be very careful about what you promote. Just telling people to visit your website doesn’t cut it. If I were you, I’d give them a reason to visit. What will they find there? Free articles on how to solve a particular problem? Free tips sheets? Free quizzes? A free ebook they can download?
I don’t know enough about Craigslist to know if there is a best day to post. I suppose it doesn’t make any difference, since the post remains there for 30 days.
