NY film-maker needs intern to do PR for documentary

Mitchell Teplitsky of New York, NY writes:

“I am self-distributing a documentary to the home video and institutional markets.

“I do my own PR, but as one-man band, it’s too much.  I’m thinking of trying to find an intern or PR firm pro bono.  The benefit: They’ll get to work with and learn how to independently market a film (few can do it well).

“The movie tells the story of two women raised in different worlds–an immigrant folk dancer from the Andes, and a modern dancer from Queens, NY–who return to Peru to reconnect with roots and an astonishing world of traditional dance and celebration.  You can learn more about it at http://www.soyandina.com/

“Do your Hounds have any suggestions on where I might look?  Are there any sources you can recommend to find people?”

Contact NY/NJ colleges and universities to promote and advertise the internship opportunity.

HI, I don’t know much about PR internships but I would make a comment on the existing promotional videos. They don’t say “buy me”, People need to be told what to do and the videos don’t say that. YouTube can be a very effective way to promote your products but this film-maker doesn’t pull the trigger. At the end of the video, which maybe is a little to long, it should say ” to purchase or more info check out http://www.soyandina.com

The same thing on the other clips, just having a web address isn’t enough. I would also put a “to buy” phrase in the description.

I have also found that different video hosting platforms get very different results and audiences. Once the video is done, put it up on 10 or more.

I also like this description in Joan’s email

“The movie tells the story of two women raised in different worlds–an immigrant folk dancer from the Andes, and a modern dancer from Queens, NY–who return to Peru to reconnect with roots and an astonishing world of traditional dance and celebration.”

this should be a voice over in the promo video but needs a concluding thought, “learn more about her story in this compelling film” something like that.

And finally on the website graphic give a six word phrase on what the movie is about instead of documentary film, that doesn’t tell me anything.
Maybe this “The dazzling story of two women raised in different worlds”

    hope this helps

    Here are a few ideas:

—Are there film schools? If so, contact them. They might have a course related to PR, and your project would be a perfect case study for them.

—Contact professional associations related to independent films and ask if they know anyone who can help.

—Contact the Public Relations Society of America at http://www.prsa.org/ and the Public Relations Student Society of America at http://www.prssa.org/

—Use Twitter’s search function to search for PR people who you can follow, and then ask, about your project.

—Ask this same question on LinkedIn. You might get a lot more responses.
