If you want to get publicity in one of the inflight magazines, you should cozy up to freelancers who write for those publications.
That’s one of several tips in the May 1 issue of PR Week. The article says freelancers tend to be more responsive and a slightly easier pitch than, say, high-end travel magazines, especially if you can come up with a trend that involves hotels or other destinatons.
I think it’s also a lot easier to catch the attention of freelancers, instead of busy editors at these magazines who are inundated with mostly useless pitches.
Other tips from the article:
- Because so many travelers flip through these magazines, you must be sure your visuals are good.
- Focus on destinations a particular airline serves.
- The magazines trigger a lot of impulse purchases, so be sure to include your website URL in your pitch.
Here’s an article I wrote that includes more pitching tips and where to find contact information for editors at more than 30 inflight magazines.
Joan, some time ago I went directly to the editor of Air Tran Airlines’ in-flight magazine. (It was called Arrivals at the time) He was more than happy to accept my original content and my article was published in the magazine shortly thereafter. It was easy! ~Monica
