Slow weekends a great time to pitch TV

Publicity Hound Sabrina Gary Anwah, public information officer at the
McLean Community Center in Fairfax County, Virginia, writes with this success story:

“Thank you for coming and speaking to the Fairfax County Government Communicators group.

“Inspired by your talk, I decided to approach a local TV reporter about our Moroccan festival. Amazingly, she agreed to come out and do a segment on it. She came and taped some of the performers and organizers at our center. the report aired on WUSA-TV 9 in the Washington D.C. area. The feature was a good 3 to 4 minutes long–the longest I have seen for such an event.

“I can’t believe this has happened, but it just goes to show a little inspiration can go a very long way.”

The Publicity Hound says: I’m glad you followed my tips and gave that TV station a story that will inform and entertain viewers. Pitching weekend events can pay off big, because weekend news cycles are so much slower than during the week. Plus, your event had people, color and motion–all the makings of a great story. But don’t stop there. TV reporter Shawne Duperon and I teamed up last year to present two teleseminars in which we suggested more than 200 story ideas you can steal and pitch to either print or broadcast reporters. We recorded the teleseminars and even compiled all the ideas on separate handouts that you can download and be reading instantly as soon as you order the cassette tape or CD.
