Yvonne Perry of Nashville, Tennessee writes:
“I am publishing my book ‘Right to Recover: Winning the Political and Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in America’ through Nightengale Press. The publication date is October 2007.
“I and need some help determining who my target market is and some tips on how I might best reach them. I have set up a blog and directed traffic there to give people an idea of what the book is about. I would appreciate some creative ways to start the buzz now and get publicity as the publication date nears.”

Stem cell research is such a hot topic and always in the news. That means there are opportunities galore to create the buzz. Let’s see how many of them my Hounds can think of.

There are quite a few podcasts that would love to interview you regarding your book. Go to http://www.theness.com and email Dr. Steven Novella. He has a weekly science/skepticism podcast that has over 15,000 listeners. These listeners are passionate about the promotion of science in society, and this book is right up their alley. If you would like more podcasts to look into, let me know.

I would suggest finding a way to get this in the hands of Michael J. Fox ASAP! He’s been an advocate for stem cell research and probably has a very wide network. If you can’t get the book directly in his hands, get it to those around him. I bet the folks at his foundation would be very interested in reading your book and possibly working together. Here’s a link: http://www.michaeljfox.org/ Good luck!

The most amazing thing that has worked for me to promote my novel “Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer” may just be perfect for you….but first you have to take a big leap of faith. My advice? Contact the folks at the Howard Stern Sirius radio show. Sounds crazy? It worked for me and it may be perfect for you due to your subject matter.
I did a little creative marketing beginning with the writing stage of my book. I had my main character mention Howard Stern in my novel, hoping that in turn, later I could point it out to his people in the “hopes that this king of all media” would mention my book as a thank you for promoting him—-IT WORKED!
Howard’s following is a committed group of 6 million people and when he said Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer” was a book that they should read because I mentioned him in a favorable light— they did. In one day it had sold out on Amazon and his fans were linking his website to my book on Amazon to make it easier for people to order it. The result? Hundreds of thousands of dollars of FREE publicity—and it repeats all day and night and on the weekends due to the structure of his show.
Before you say I am crazy, (and that he only was interested in the book because it is a lesbian novel and Howard is a big promoter of lesbians) you should know that Howard is a HUGE supporter of stem cell research. My sugggestion (if it is not too late) is to mention him in YOUR book—then send the book to his people. You can contact me directly for his information if you would like. MariLaughs@cox.net
As for my plan B—I am contacting Ellen and Oprah next since I mentioned them both in my book as well!
Good LUCK!!

Hello Yvonne, write on!
My name is Harold Cooper and I do not know much about stem cell research nor the people who do or do not support it. But I do know of a young lady that would probably be able to help you. Her name is Sabrina Cohen of the Sabrina Cohen Foundation. Her email address is sabrina@sabrinacohenfoundation.org and I am sure she will be more than happy to hear from you. She doesn’t know me. I ran across her website trying to find places and people to promote my product and ended up sending people to her. I am going to drop down and list my info so as not to distract from the importance of you contacting her.
I have my own health issues but nothing close to Sabrina’s. God Bless you and your work and the best of luck with your book.
Harold

I think the Howard Stern is a great one, don’t overlook it.
You might think about putting Michael Moore on your list as well since his Sicko ( health care documentary?) will soon premier.
Add Bill Clinton, Arnold Schwarzenegger to the list. (Maybe Jimmy Carter?)
Don’t forget to send copies to the Bible thumpers. They’ll trash it but hey it’s free pub.
How about doing book tours not in book stores but say Cord Blood Bank Hospitals across the US.
Anyone that fills out a donor card gets a free book or ebook version of the book (slip in a discount coupon for a hardcopy version of the book).
How about some kind of hip t-shirt to go along with the book,
Just some quick brainstorming to get the idea going…
