If you’re looking for trend stories to pitch and you’re coming up dry, find the Jan. 31, 2005 edition of the Wall Street Journal. It included a special section called “The Top 10 Trends in 10 Industries.” The industries are consumer electronics, video games, credit cards, higher education, architecture, music, accounting, agriculture, furniture and defense.
If you provide a product or service in those categories, the section is important because it will tip you off to what journalists will be covering in the months ahead. Tie your pitch to a trend and you’re as good as in.
You can piggyback a contest, poll, survey, White Paper or your own holiday onto a trend. So if you missed the section, a trip to the local library would be well worth it.
