Piggyback off “Commander in Chief”

TV reporter Shawne Duperon has a great publicity idea for women business owners. It ties into the premiere of the ABC prime-time drama “Commander in Chief” on Sept. 27.

“Create a fun contest at work, surveying your employees about when they believe a woman will run the country,” Shawne says. “Remember: Only pitch to ABC affiliates. They will LOVE that story!”

I agree, particularly because many are already predicting that New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the Democratic nominee for president. But why limit this idea just to women who own businesses? Guys can try this, too. Whenever your story idea can tie into a prime-time show, or a movie of the week, pitch it to the corresponding channel. But be sure you know the best way to contact busy assignment editors.

Shawne, who was my guest during a recorded teleseminar a few years ago titled “How to Get on the Local TV News Tomorrow,” knows all the inside secrets for convincing a TV station to air your story. She suggests you first identify what she calls “The Queen Bee,” the person who makes all the decisions on what stories will be covered. Then pick up the phone, pitch your idea and see what happens.
