How to Sell More Fiction and Nonfiction Books with Pinterest: Free Training Nov. 12

Since Beth Hayden started teaching me about Pinterest several years ago, she and I have brainstormed of all sorts of ways an author can use the social media site for sharing dazzling images.

Beth says one of the easiest ideas is for authors to create a travel board. It can include photos of gorgeous mountains, rivers and landscapes of the exact area where your story takes place.

Or it can be a general travel board of places you’d love to visit, similar to the one best-selling author Joanna Penn created above. It’s called The Thriller Life. Travel and Adventure!  You can include photos on fun vacations and excursions.  Joanna included photos of herself skydiving and scuba diving.

Why People Love Travel Boards

A board like this helps followers get to know you better—something you should welcome because selling a book right out of the gate is difficult. You know exactly what I mean if you’ve been pinning your cover repeatedly, but nobody’s buying.

Travel boards also satisfy the wanderlust of armchair travelers and anyone who just loves dreaming about faraway places.

Write fiction? Create one or more boards that feature photos, videos, quotations and maps of your book’s locale.

If the action takes place in New Orleans, for example, you can have a board of Cajun and Creole food, a board of voodoo dolls and one dedicated to jazz.

Write sci-fi? Your fans might love a board of posters, paintings and other sci-fi art. Or images of famous characters in sci-fi movies, TV programs and comic books.

Nonfiction authors can have just as much fun pinning.

For a book on breastfeeding, you can have an entire board devoted to nursing in public, or a a general board of breastfeeding photos, quotes and illustrations.

You don’t even need eye-popping photos to pin. My board on 50 Tips for Free Publicity includes simple how-to tips created in PowerPoint. Each pin leads to a blog post. The board still ranks on the first page of Google for the phrase “free publicity.” Any author who’s written about a dry or academic topic, or one that’s difficult to illustrate, could create a board like this that includes tips from their books.
