RedEye, free Chicago tabloid, to publish on Saturday

RedEye, the free tabloid published by the Chicago Tribune, will start publishing a weekend edition, delivered for free, each Saturday.

The newspaper is one of the many free tabloids that have sprung up in major cities throughout the U.S. to capture advertising and readership in the 18-to-34 age bracket, a group in which readership has been eroding.

The edition will carry zoned preprint ads. To receive the paper, register online or call 1-877-4-REDEYE. RedEye also will be delivering samples of the issue to encourage registration.

RedEye currently distributes approximately 150,000 copies of each weekday edition throughout Chicago through more than 3,000 outlets, including newspaper boxes, train stations and select retail outlets. RedEye’s weekly readership reached 685,500 in 2006, up nearly 20 percent from 2005. It is expected to deliver up to 100,000 copies of the new weekend edition.

As I explained in my ebook “How to Use Photos & Graphics in Your Publicity Campaign,” papers like these are heavy on photos. That means you don’t only have to pitch stories. Stand-alone photos are also welcome.
